Based on how complex a user is, this can be customized so that say a red light means missed call, a green light means unread messages and so on and so on. Others like Sony and Oppo have toyed with the idea of a stylish glowing strip of light at the bottom that appears to have struck a chord with users. Some have gone ahead to bake the same functionality into the capacitive home button albeit with some fancy names like breathing or pulsating light (hello Tecno). 
 
Samsung, which so far, has belonged to the earlier group of those who’ve stuck with the front LED light for better for worse seems to be itching to do something new.

That new thing appears to be the Smart Glow feature that has been talked about in the tech press for the last few weeks thanks to it leaking every now and then be it in patent filings or in rumours about upcoming devices. And now we have an almost real device that is tipped to be one of the first to ship with Smart Glow: the upcoming Galaxy J2 (2016). 
 
Smart Glow, as can be seen from the above image, consists of a ring of light around the back camera that lights up to indicate unchecked alerts. 
 
The Galaxy J2 (2016) is the expected successor to last year’s Galaxy J2, one of the many devices Samsung released to cater to the budget market segment served by its Galaxy J series. It will be unveiled in a week’s time in India (where it also unveiled the first generation J2) and later on start showing up in other markets around the world. 
 
Other than the Galaxy J2 (2016), Samsung is expected to make the feature available on other new devices as well. On premium Samsung devices, the Smart Glow feature is expected to do much more than tell the user when they have new notifications.

The data bundles are cool but somehow tricky mainly because of the validity period allocated to them. Flash Keyboard is among the most popular applications in Google playstore as it has recorded over 50 million downloads and was sometime ranked as the 11th most popular app on playstore but unknowingly to users, the app is full of malware and not safe for users. This was recently discovered by a UK-based cyber-security firm by name Pentest . They found the keyboard to be asking for “excessive permissions”, displaying infected ads, asking for admin privileges in order to make uninstall very difficult, monitoring user behavior, and then sending data to servers in China without the user’s consent. 
 
Reasons Why Flash Keyboard App Is A Malware 
According to Pentest 
1. The app requires unwanted access to a phone’s Bluetooth connection, geo-location feature, or Wi-Fi status which is not ideal for a keyboard app. 
 
2. The app always ask for access to kill background processes, read SMS messages, show system overlays, or remove download notifications. Pentest says there are no reasons for a keyboard app to require these intrusive permissions. 
 
3. Flash Keyboard was asking for device admin permissions, and was using these powers to take over the smartphone’s lock screen and show ads even if users opted out. 
 
4. Flash Keyboard secretly transfers data to secret servers located in China and other foreign countries. The app transmitted sensitive user data including the owner’s email address, device manufacturer, model number, IMEI and Android version to what it believes to be analytics servers in the US, Netherlands and China. 
 
5. Flash Keyboard sends details of the currently connected Wi-Fi network and others in the proximity, the identity of the mobile network being used and GPS coordinates that are accurate to within three meters of the user.

The feature now has been spotted in Android as Android Police reports where it sports a new name: Marketplace.

The Marketplace icon sits predominantly between the video and notification icons which when tapped, ushers you with the “Buy and sell things in your neighbourhood” banner. It appears to require your location info for it to populate items that are being sold in your area. At the bottom, there are three tabs: Explore, Selling and Buying which of course is self explanatory. In addition, there is a button at the bottom left to toggle your location and on the right to take a photo of an item you would want to sell. On the selling tab, you will be able to see messages from interested buyers and on the buying tab, you will be able to keep tabs of items and also chat with the sellers. 
 
This is a really cool addition to the Facebook experience and dedicated platforms like OLX should be worried of such a move by Facebook. Facebook has the audience to make such an endeavour successful and we have to wait and see if this feature will be released to everyone in the future.

Since Instagram is part of Facebook, it is bound to be integrated into the mother-ship’s ecosystem and it started with sharing of advertisers, then the easy login via your Facebook app. Now, you can actually login to your Instagram account right within the Facebook app. 
 
When you click on the hamburger menu on the far right on the Facebook app, you are usually greeted with a lot of options like the one showed above. Under “favourites”, you can see that Instagram has been integrated just above Facebook Moments which is another Facebook app that organizes your photos using AI. 
 
When you tap on the Instagram section (which weirdly does not have the the updated icon), it takes you straight to your Instagram timeline hassle free which is cool. Also, it displays a counter, which seems to be the number of Facebook friends you have on Instagram. However, it is an easy addition to access Instagram easily while browsing on Facebook and maybe in the future, they may integrate another popular Facebook owned app: WhatsApp.

On Monday this week, the Vice President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives 
and other government officials joined me to host Iftar reception at the State House with Nigerians of different backgrounds including Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), artisans and Physically-challenged persons. 
 
Like I said during the reception, I want to once again appeal to those of us who have the means, to remember the millions of Nigerians who are suffering deprivation because of violence perpetrated by terrorists. 
 
I am not unaware of what Nigerians are going through and I want to use this medium to commend the amazing sacrifices of Nigerians in the face of the temporary economic and social challenges and also reassure Nigerians that my administration is working assiduously towards providing basic needs and other amenities. 
 
Let me also use this opportunity to reaffirm that we will not relent in the fight against corruption and we will ensure that all appropriate and legal measures are deplored to root out this malaise. 
 
I commend the Armed Forces and security agencies for the gains recorded in the fight against terrorists and the rescue of hostages in the North East part of the country. 
 
I also appeal for the support, understanding and patience of all Nigerians and our international partners as we explore the fastest means to end the economic sabotage in the Niger Delta and amicably resolve the conflicts within the region. 
 
I promise you all better days ahead even as we remain grateful for your unflinching support to our administration.

JAMB Adopts “Point System” Option For 2016 Admission. How To Calculate Points

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has announced the release of its guidelines for the 2016 admissions’ process. 
 
The method, described as the point system option, was adopted after an extensive one-week meeting JAMB had with universities and other tertiary institutions’ administrators in the country. 
 
 
 
According to the guidelines contained in a statement placed on its website on Monday night, JAMB said that the modalities were going to be based on point system. 
 
While explaining how the admission process would work for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination candidates and direct entry students, the organisation stated that universities were going to charge fees for screening of candidates at the end of the process for admission. 
 
According to JAMB, the new method uses a point system to offer provisional admission to candidates. 
 
“Before a candidate can be considered for screening, he/she must have been offered a provisional admission by JAMB. The JAMB admission checker portal is going to be opened soon for this process, so praying is all you can do now,” JAMB said. 
 
The second process, it said, was the point system where admission would depend on the point tally of the candidate. 
 
The statement said, “JAMB’s provisional admission no longer makes much sense this year, your points tally will decide your faith. The points are evenly spread out between your O’ Level and JAMB results to provide a level-playing field for all.

“In the first case, any candidate who submits only one result which contains his/her relevant subjects already has 10 points. The exam could be NECO, WASSCE, November/December WASSCE etc, but any candidate who has two sittings only gets 2 points. So this means that candidates with only one result are at an advantage but only just.” 
 
The organisation added that the “next point grades fell into the O’ Level grades where each grade would have it equivalent point; A=6 marks, B=4 marks, C=3 marks, so the better the candidates’ grades, the better his or her chances of securing admission this year. 
 
“The next point is the UTME scores where each score range has its equivalent point which can be summarised thus, 180-200=20-23 marks, 200-250=24-33 points, 251-300=34-43, 300-400=44-60 points,” JAMB explained. 
 
Giving a breakdown, JAMB explained that each category would contain five JAMB results per point added. 
 
For example a candidate with 180-185 gets 20 points, while a candidate with 186-190 gets 21 points. 
 
JAMB added that the point system for direct entry would be released soon. 
 
JAMB stated that fees would still be charged for screening which would replace the Post UTME test. 
 
JAMB also emphasised that catchment and educationally less-developed state would still be used for admission into the nation’s tertiary institutions. 
 
JAMB said, “Merit contains 45 per cent of the total candidates for a particular course, Catchment contains 35 per cent and ELDS and staff lists contains the rest. Cut off marks will be released by the institutions this year in the form of points and not marks. 
 
“If a school declares its cut off mark for Medicine as 90 points and JAMB grants a candidate with 250 a provisional admission but his/her total points falls short of the 90 points, then he/she will lose the admission. So the provisional admission is just a means to an end, not the end in itself.

Facebook Pages are important for the Facebook ecosystem since it is the melting pot at which businesses and celebrities meet their customers/fans. It is quite important that Facebook makes sure that this relationships are fostered even better and one of the ways is by making design changes and that is what they have been doing to Pages. 
 
Last week, we reported that Facebook was testing a new layout for Pages and that was specifically for desktop. It looked really nice although there was no information as when it would be rolled out to the mobile. The company finally rolled it out on the mobile app during the weekend.

For starters in this case, the Tutowap branding has been removed from header and placed at the bottom of it and to the left. 
 
Another very conspicuous change is the menu carousel at the bottom which includes the following options: Home, Reviews, About, Posts, Photos, Videos and Events. They allow the administrator and the people who have liked the Page to quickly navigate within the page. Home takes you to the home page, reviews shows you the user reviews out of 5 stars, About gives you the details about the page, Posts/videos/photos show you the content the Page has posted and Events shows you the events from the page. 
 
This new user interface is way better than the previous one in my opinion and would likely to increase the engagement in these pages. It is interesting to note that the desktop version has not been updated with the new interface in this region so far so most likely it will be updated next soon.

Facebook announced the improved Messenger platform in April during the F8 conference which included the introduction of bots. There were very few Messenger bots that were launched during the conference and now the company has revealed an update to the Messenger Platform.

2. Ratings: This will allow you to give a star rating to a bot which is awesome for feedback for both users and developers. 
3. Persistent menu: There will be now a persistent menu which will have upto 5 actions so as to eliminate the need to remember the various text commands you need to use to interact with the bot 
4. Account linking: Facebook will launch a way for businesses to connect their customers’ accounts with Messenger accounts which will be an opt in option. 
5. More content types: Developers will now be able to send other formats like GIFS, video, audio and other file types which will play natively in Messenger. This will lead to more interactive bots that display rich media which is awesome. 
6. Developer resource: Facebook has created a “resource” for businesses and developers to get information what is happening in the platform from their engineering and product teams. This is Facebook’s attempt to foster a good relationship with businesses and developers and this could lead to better bots being made for Messenger. 
 
This update will definitely lead to better bots being made for Messenger which is important for Facebook since they are positioning it as a business tool. As it approaches the billion user mark, Messenger’s importance in the Facebook ecosystem will only become more pronounced.

We take for granted the infinite scroll button which has become standard in websites and some apps. 2. Notification for a group avatar change 
 
In the new update, if you change the avatar of a group, there will be a notification that will be sent in the chat timeline showing you the old versus the new one, presumably to notify the members. 
 
3. Missed call notification 
 
Previously when you got a missed call, it was shown in the Calls tab in a scrollable list. WhatsApp has now added an extra notification within the chat timeline of the person you were conversing with. 
 
4. New UI for creating broadcasts and groups 
 
WhatsApp made a huge material design change for the Android app and that was a while ago. It brought about a new design which we love and now they have updated the group and broadcast interfaces. You will be able to select contacts which will be highlighted at the top with huge thumbnails which you can remove at will. 
 
5. Olympic Games emoji 
 
We are in an Olympic year and they are one of the most watched sporting events in the world. Social networking platforms always jump on the bandwagon of these sports and in WhatsApp case, they have the Olympic Games emoji which is their logo that got “emojified.” 
 
6. Actions for unknown contacts 
 
Sometimes you get messages on WhatsApp from people who you haven’t saved their contacts in your phone book. Previously, you were given a block and add tabs but now, you have been given a menu list with three options: Report Spam, Block and Add to Contacts which is convenient. 
 
7. Error message of unsupported phones 
 
This is the most interesting update but it is not old news. Back in February, WhatsApp said that they would drop support for older devices which included older versions of Android. They have implemented this in this update where you will receive this error message.
