Normally, Android device makers commit to updating the software on their devices for at least 18-months, the same period that Google also promises to update its own Nexus devices. Some, like Samsung and HTC, take things a notch higher and promise 24 months support for their flagship devices.<br />

With such a background, it is very easy to see why some notable devices from the past like the LG G2, the Xperia Z3, the Galaxy S5 and the Nexus 5 are not going to ever get some official Android 7.0 love from the powers that be. However, one thing we often overlook is the role played by different players in the Android ecosystem. Various components of these devices (the hardware) like the RAM must be able to support the demands of a newer version of Android. This is mainly what is often cited as the reason behind Samsung abandoning the popular Galaxy S3 when it came to receiving a Kitkat update.<br />

Another hardware component that is equally critical in the process is the system on a chip (SoC) that in this case includes the device’s processor and the accompanying graphics card. Since most Android device makers rely on SoCs from third parties i.e. vendors like Qualcomm, MediaTek and others, these third parties must commit to updating their SoC’s in order to match the demands of a new version of Android. If that doesn’t happen then it’s all for nothing. Sure, the cool nerdy kids of XDA Developers will swing into action and come up with an alternative solution but it won’t be as smooth as the device makers would want.<br />
<br />
Geeks can live with a few bugs here and there but the devices out there are made for everyone and are used everywhere. From playing Pokemon Go on the streets to the deepest levels of enterprise environments. As such, a device maker cannot go ahead and issue an update that just makes the device unreliable or even exposes it to new security issues.<br />
<br />
With this in mind now, it is hardly surprising that it is emerging that Qualcomm could be responsible for a number of devices being stuck on Android Marshmallow and past Android versions indefinitely since the company is no longer supporting a fan favourite from the past, the Snapdragon 800 and its successor the Snapdragon 801 chip.<br />
<br />
Qualcomm is apparently not releasing updates to the chips’ graphics drivers which is needed before they can support Android Nougat. Since the Snapdragon 800 and 801 were around for a while, this means that quite a number of devices are affected if at all their makers had any plans to move forward and update them anyway.<br />

This is not a new development, Such news came up a few years ago when Google dropped support for the Galaxy Nexus. Despite the device having legally reached its end of support, some fingers were still pointed at Texas Instruments, the makers of its OMAP chip. In subsequent years, even third party developers have hit a cliff when it came to fully developing for the device and releasing ROMs based on recent Android versions thanks to the lack of updates on the SoC.<br />
<br />
On the flip side, by shifting blame as we deem fit, we’re becoming apologists for what is an unacceptable outcome. This is because device makers that also make their own chips like Samsung (Exynos) and Huawei (Kirin) don’t have a stellar record when it comes to updates either and despite making their own chips in-house, they don’t go past the 2-year window when it comes to supporting devices, something that rival Apple has been able to do so well over the years.<br />

Unfortunately, the cause of the problem is unknown although, a well know YouTube channel, iFixit claims that the fault lies with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus’ logic board, which is the segment of the phone that enhances communication between the different elements of the device. <br />

Apple Is Apparently Working On a Snapchat-like App

Apple is both a software and hardware company and it is one of the few tech companies that are known to provide both in an almost equal level. However in the past decade, there has been a change in the force thanks to the eruption of social media sites like Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter. Apple had a social network back in the day called Ping that that was discontinued rather quickly (after a month) and it seems from a report by Bloomberg that they want to dip their toes in the social networking craze.<br />

According to VentureBeat, Backstage will see YouTube add different types of content including text posts, polls appearing in a reverse chronological order. In addition to the normal YouTube sharing modes,Backstage will also allow users to share Backstage-only videos akin to Facebook Live. When a user shares videos they will also have the option of sending it to Twitter, Facebook and other platforms where these forms of content will appear much like how Instagram previews and links appear on Twitter. This will all be possible after users install a beta version of Samsung’s Gear Manager application meant for iOS devices. The beta program is said to run from yesterday (August 24th) through to September 19th. A beta sign up page is live for those interested. Just make sure your device is running iOS 8.4 and up. For those with jailbroken iOS devices, the leaked Gear Manager for iOS app has been floating around the interwebs for a while now (good luck finding it since Samsung’s R&D team has been very active in ensuring it is pulled down in the various file sharing sites it was popping up).<br />

The choice of September 19th is rather curious, though. With the Gear S3, the Gear S2’s successor, already confirmed for launch next week at IFA 2016 in Berlin, that is around the time it is likely going on sale in various markets. That hints at one thing: the Gear S3 will be compatible with iPhones running recent versions of iOS straight out of the box.<br />

Last week, Twitter introduced a new feature for the mobile apps that is geared to let you filter your notifications way better. It was first rolled out to iOS users and now it has been ported to the Android app.<br />

Just like how Twitter explained the features earlier, they have added a dedicated settings tab on your notification ta Yb to help you filter out your notifications. On Android, there is a persistent toolbar at the bottom of the screen with three tabs: All, Mentions and Options. When you tap “All”, it will show you all of your replies and interactions while tapping “mentions” will only show you replies from other users. This is an update that was carried forward from twitter.com that has been there for a while.<br />

The only new thing added is the Quality Filter which was the headline feature. According to Twitter, this feature “improves the quality of tweets you see by using a variety of signals such as account origin and behaviour. When turned on, it filters lower-quality content like duplicate tweets or content that appears to be automated.” They also went ahead to explain that it does not filter content from the people you follow or those who you interacted with recently. However, when you activate it, you will notice it will affect tweets that supersede what you see on your notifications and onto other places like top search results. This can be seen as a move to stem out bots which is a big problem in Twitter thanks to their annoying automated replies that appear in your notifications tab.

From the translation done by Facebook, the statement says that: “I am pleased to announce that we launched the offline version of the processing of photos of our styles.” According to Engadget, the company claimed that it has been able to implement the neural tech in a smartphone which is the key selling point of the app. There is a downside where only half of the 16 Prisma filters will be available offline but they promise to add the rest in the future.<br />

This move to free their servers from processing the filter information paved way for their second announcement: Video. “Now that we’ve implemented neural networks right to the smartphones, we have enough server capacity to run full videos on them in the near future.” As you can remember, the video feature was announced earlier and this news is a build up to that.<br />

Well this cool feature is only available on iOS and of course the offline processing speed depends on the iPhone that you have. Apparently according to the company, the iPhone 6S takes 2.5 seconds to repaint a photo while the older iPhone 6 takes 3 seconds. Since Android is more fragmented than iOS, this will take longer obviously and droids will be updated later on.

Google released the Android N Developer Preview to some variants of the Xperia Z3 (D6603 and D6653) in partnership with Sony and if anything, this was seen as a sign of good things to come for the two-year-old device. Like it has done in the past, Sony is not showing any love to mid-tier devices like those in its C series and others down the food chain.<br />

Well it is no secret that most people do not like videos on their feed start autoplaying without sound and that is why by default, they usually autoplay while muted. But, the company confirmed to Mashable of a test that is devoid of this simple setting.<br />
<br />
“We’re running a small test in News Feed where people can choose whether they want to watch videos with sound on from the start”, a spokesperson told the publication. Apparently this test was done in Australia where some residents may have noticed that the sound plays immediately after the video starts while others were able to turn the sound on from an icon that is located on the bottom right of the video.<br />
<br />
This test is rather odd since from their research specifically on video ads, 80% of people “react negatively” to those ads that catch them by surprise. Having the sound on as default works in certain settings for example when you are alone in a location but generally people prefer the sound being off initially and be given the power to turn it on when needed.<br />
<br />
You can understand why Facebook is doing this where you can speculate they want people to engage with the content in their feed rather than letting it being a plastic view but since this is a test, we will have to see how it will turn out.

Today, though, Samsung is no longer prioritising OneDrive on its devices as can be seen in the Galaxy Note 7 where the company has introduced its own competing cloud storage offering in Samsung Cloud.<br />

So, what to do?<br />

Pursue other partners as well. That is exactly what Microsoft has done after managing to ink a deal with Chinese device maker Lenovo that will see Lenovo preload Microsoft apps like Skype, OneDrive and Office on its new smartphones. According to various reports, the smartphones in question will only be Lenovo’s premium devices.<br />

Just like in the Samsung case, the agreement with Lenovo also involves patents touching on both Lenovo and Motorola devices. It is one way for the company to get value from device makers like Lenovo and Samsung whose devices use some of its patents and have had to pay for royalties. Word on the street puts the figure at not less than $5 per device or more than $2 billion every year. That is at least $5 paid to Microsoft for every Android device sold. That has meant that Microsoft has been making more money from the royalties Android device makers pay it than from sales of its own Lumia mobile devices and licensing of its Windows Phone operating system.<br />

Even though it has recently been kicked out of the top 5 smartphone vendors in the world list, Lenovo still ships millions of smartphone units annually and a good number of those will now ship with Microsoft apps pre-installed.

Blackberry has in the recent times increased its offerings as far as software goes as it seeks to move away from its loss-making hardware business. Part of the move has seen the Waterloo company begun to take measures to monetize its 38,000 patents through licensing. The company has also been opening up its exclusive services to users on other platforms. First was the opening up of BBM in 2013 to users on  Android and iOS. Recently, Blackberry allowed users on any Android device to download and install the Blackberry Hub which is a centralized suite for all things communication.<br />

Even with this generosity, Blackberry seems intent on going after OEMs who either knowingly or unwittingly have used the company’s patents on their devices. Last week, the company sued Internet telephony firm Avaya over patent infringements. Blackberry claimed at Avaya infringed parents relating to speech decoding and compression, tracking location of mobile devices as well as methods of displaying messages among other patents. As such, Blackberry is demanding loyalties from the company for some of its products including  Avaya’s video conferencing systems, Avaya Communicator for iPad, a product that connects mobile users to IP Office systems, and various IP desk phones.<br />
<br />
This week, Blackberry has turned on Blu, an android device manufacture stating that its infringed on 15 of Blackberry’s patents including a software code-signing system, a phone log display and a battery disconnection system. Others include patents for detecting the number of transmit antennas in a base station as well as methods and systems for signaling connection release indication according to Ars Technica.

According to a statement from Samsung, the service has been particularly popular in its home market, Korea, where users have added nearly 11 million cards (ATMs, loyalty, credit etc) to the mobile payments service.<br />

The service hitting the 100 million transaction mark globally is despite the fact that Samsung Pay is only available in a handful of countries. The US (including Puerto Rico), Korea, Spain, Singapore, Australia, China and Brazil are the only places where the service is live.<br />

The service’s other limiting factor is the devices that users can access it with. So far, Samsung has restricted Samsung Pay to its premium smartphones in the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series with 2016 editions of the Galaxy A5, A7 and A9 being the only exceptions to the rule. It has been previously reported that the company was working to bring the service to more budget devices but that is yet to happen.

Opera has always been one of those companies that release really welcome products for the masses and it is well known for its browsers. However, Opera has had other ideas about offering VPN services. On May this year, they launched a free unlimited VPN service on the App Store, an in-app VPN service on their desktop browser and now they are doing the same for Android.<br />

The cool thing about it is that the VPN is free, does not have data restrictions and does not need some form of restriction which on paper is what everybody looks for in a VPN. This looks too good to be true and would mean that there could be some strings attached. Apparently in order to cover the cost of providing the free VPN service, Opera will show ads and collect data. The last part could be frightening in this age where privacy is all but a blur but according to the company, they would only collect data of “how a large group of people use their phones.”<br />

Nevertheless, if you still want to use the app, you will be glad to know that it will allow you to seem like you are in either Singapore, Netherlands, US, Germany or Canada. It will also have the ability to show you how secure your WiFi network is and an in-app ad blocker to prevent advertisers from tracking you.
