LinkedIn Will Get A Visual Overhaul And New Features Like Bots

If you’ve been using the Internet for at least 5 years, you would know LinkedIn as a network where you connect with other professionals and it has grown to a community of over 400 million active users. It was recently bought by Microsoft for a whopping $26 billion and now we are seeing changes that are being effected on the network.<br />

Opera Web Browser for Android Gets Material Design in Latest Update

Over two years since Google started rolling out the new Android design guidelines popularly known as Material Design, the Opera web browser Android app is finally catching up.<br />

Alongside the switch to Google’s Material Design guidelines, the app has also picked up several other enhancements (just enhancements, feature-wise there’s nothing much).<br />

The news feed now features a “reader mode” which essentially cuts out any clutter in the news items displayed resulting in them loading much faster when accessed.<br />

A quick access panel at the bottom of the browser page is where users can access quick shortcuts to one’s personal corner, where all articles saved for later offline reading, bookmarks, settings and more can be found. As has been the case before, a shortcut to this is available as a three-dot menu in the top right corner of the browser when one is on a web page.<br />

Opera has been adding several features to its browsers on both the web and mobile recently. Its desktop web browser is now one of the few that won’t drain your battery fast while Opera mini, the popular smaller alternative to the main mobile browser, now allows users to download videos for offline viewing later instead of just compressing video to save on data. All Opera browsers already have built-in ad blockers while a separate VPN app exists on mobile to protect user privacy (it is built in on the desktop browser now).<br />

The changes are being rolled out via an update to the Opera app to both smartphones and tablets gradually (so it may be a while before you actually see them).

There are several applications that one can install on their smartphone regardless of whichever platform they are on (Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Windows…) to restrict access to certain apps to only when a password or PIN is provided.<br />

Some application developers have even gone an extra step to include similar features in their applications. Apps like Safaricom M-Ledger, KCB Mobile Banking and Tala, for instance, request a 4-digit PIN every time you launch them. Guess which major app will be going that route soon a<br />
Such a move will be a big plus to the Facebook-owned popular messaging app more so in the wake of the blowback occasioned by Google’s decision to force users to choose between convenience and privacy in what was supposed to be a killer new age chat app, Allo. Not that WhatsApp has not endured its fair share of privacy concerns since it was acquired by Facebook 2 years ago. Its latest move to grant Facebook access to sensitive user data in order to make better friend suggestions and serve up the right ads was met by scores of concerns for user privacy with many advising others to not opt in to the arrangement.<br />

Like the dreaded Android lock screen patterns and PINs, adding passcode protection to an app used by over a billion people regularly presents another kind of risk: users being locked out of their WhatsApp accounts if they forget their passcodes. To avert this, WhatsApp is reportedly exploring the idea of optionally allowing users to add email addresses through which they can recover any forgotten passcodes.<br />

Normally, this is where I remind all WhatsApp users how this has always been a feature on rival feature-rich messaging app Telegram for like forever (one can even set up a fingerprint to unlock the app on devices with fingerprint sensors) but I’ll let them be under my new “live and let live” approach.

Huawei Mate 9 Tipped to Include Iris Scanner

If the fingerprint scanner was the fad three years ago thanks to the iPhone 5s making it cool again then Samsung may have just started such a trend when it included an iris scanner in its exploding (sorry, I just couldn’t help it) Galaxy Note 7 (never mind that the Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950XL also have the feature that takes advantage of Windows Hello).<br />

It is used to authenticate users before they gain access to the device by using the iris sensor to scan a user’s eyes by shining an infrared ray of light. Whether Huawei will go the Samsung route as far as implementing the iris scanner goes is something we’ll have to wait and see. The company already deploys some of the fastest fingerprint scanners on its devices (the P9 is really fast!).<br />

Other rumoured specifications of the device that is expected to be unveiled in early November include 20-megapixel dual-cameras, a choice of either 4GB or 6GB RAM and 64GB, 128GB and 256GB (for the 6 gig RAM model) storage options, a Kirin 960 SoC and a revamped version (5) of Emotion UI based on Android 7.0 Nougat.<br />

Since it is over a year and a half since Huawei announced the gorgeous Huawei Watch, isn’t it about time it got an upgrade? That is said to be on the way. The second generation Huawei Watch will reportedly be bundled with the 6GB RAM Mate 9 while available as an option for the other models.

Galaxy Note 7 to Come in New Onyx Black Colour

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 smartphone global rollout was interrupted by a defect in the device’s battery that resulted in multiple reported instances of the device exploding and putting its users and their properties in harm’s way. Samsung reacted in a timely manner by halting sales and recalling the over 2.5 million units of the device that had already been shipped worldwide. That was not before the device entered the bad books of the sensitive civil aviation industry that saw it banned from several flights across the globe.<br />

With the exploding fiasco already handled and replacement devices shipping to both old and new customers (sales resume on September 28th), Samsung is looking to the future. That future includes a new colour option that the device will arrive in, Onyx Black. That’s right, black. With the iPhone 7’s ‘Jet Black’ model having set off a new scramble despite Apple warning its customers that it is susceptible to scratches than the other iPhone 7 models, it only makes sense that Samsung too would want to have something to offer its customers as an alternative even as it battles the Note 7’s newly-created image problem.<br />

But there is a catch. For now, the Onyx Black Galaxy Note 7 is only confirmed for Korea, Samsung’s home market. International availability? That’s still a “maybe”.<br />

The Galaxy Note 7 launched in Blue Coral, Gold Platinum, and Silver Titanium colour models. It is unlikely that a new colour option of a device that has garnered bad reputation over the last few weeks will change public perception of the device any time soon but one’s got to try, right? It’s what Samsung is doing and we can only wish them luck this time around.

✔ The so called "larger 1,920 mAh battery" costs about $2.50. I don't really know why Apple don't want to improve on device battery. Imagine when other phones are offering 4000mAh and above battery capacity, Apple is still rotating in a circle of below 2000mAh and still sales the phone for half a million Naira.<br />

How does the Issuance of Laptops to Standard One Pupils Take Place?

One of the key promises of the Jubilee government was to issue laptops to Standard one students in Kenya. The government in 2015 unveiled the digital literacy program under an inter-ministerial committee to champion for the project. During the annual budget read in June 2015, the Kenya government set aside Kshs. 17.58 billion for deployment of ICT learning devices to schools, development of digital content, building the capacity of teachers and rolling out computer laboratory for class 4 to class 8 in all schools throughout the country which set the project in motion.<br />

Earlier in the year, the government announced that the consortia of Moi University– JP SA Couto and Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology (JKUAT)- Positivo BGH won the Kshs. 17 Billion tenders to supply laptops. The consortia were then to pilot the project before issuing of devices begun. The deployment of the devices to 22,000 schools across Kenya begun in September with over 600,000 devices to be issued.<br />

We spoke with Calvin Kebati, the Director at  Nairobi Industrial and Technology Park, which involved in the JKUAT-Positivo BGH deal on how they go about it. The two companies that won the tender have a select number of counties they are responsible for deploying and their activities are restricted to these areas.<br />
<br />
The initial process involves a 3-5 day teacher training program, where the teachers are introduced to ICT and taught various modules such as integration of ICT in education. “We train the teachers in content creation, how to use the devices from both the teacher and student angle”, says Calvin.  The next step involves the inspection of the facilities to ensure they meet certain standards. “We usually check if the school has electricity, storage capabilities, security measures and if these conditions are suitable for the deployment of the devices,” he says.<br />
<br />
The installation of the devices takes place next, where the devices are set-up. The devices include a 10-inch tablets learners digital device (LDD) and a 14-inch laptop as the teachers’ digital device. There is also a projector for each of the schools. Special needs students receive 12-inch laptops with braille key boards, headphones and an embosser. The deployment also offers an access point which also acts as a file server. The content is stored in this access point, making it an e-library. Teachers also have the ability to develop their own content and store it here for future use and access. “This process of deployment takes place hand-in-hand with the teachers to ensure they fully understand what we offered during the training process,” he says.<br />
<br />
After the completion of the installation, a post installation training and support takes place. “We have a dedicated call-center where teachers can call and ask questions about the devices. We also ensure we offer technical support for the devices,” says Calvin. To ensure continued support, the project has been working to identify ICT champions who are mainly teachers within the school to serve as trainers and deal with any emerging issues with the devices. They have also been working with locals with ICT knowledge to help with the local support.

Since both Google Now and Google Assistant appear to be doing pretty much the same stuff even though the latter is clearly ahead, it makes sense that Google would move ahead with plans to fold the former into the latter.<br />

Google Assistant is making its debut today in the new messaging app, Allo, whose global rollout began today. It is expected to be officially unveiled during the Pixel event on October 4th since it is the main feature of Google Home, also expected to make its debut on the same day.<br />

So, instead of being sad, we can think of it as a relaunch. Only that the “Now” name may be gone for good.

Report: Nokia 216 is Now the Latest Cheap Phone from Microsoft

While everyone seems fixated on smartphones, there’s still need for feature phones. In Kenya, besides being in use for various purposes alongside calling and texting, they are popular for one thing: M-PESA, the country’s popular mobile money service. Thanks to Microsoft, we have what we can call “a new advanced M-PESA phone”, the Nokia 216.<br />
<br />
Like other Nokia-branded feature phones from Microsoft we’ve seen over the last one year, the Nokia 216 has access to basic internet (2G) to power bundled apps like the Opera mini browser and Opera mobile app store, Bluetooth connectivity (very important for the Slam feature) and a battery with up to 18 hours talk time. It runs on Series 30+ and has a pair of 0.3-megapixel cameras on both the front and the back.<br />

From the Nokia 216’s specifications (see all of them here) it is a step behind last year’s Nokia 230, and an upgrade to the Nokia 215 that was announced in early 2015 (it has double the RAM, for instance).<br />

What’s more, the 2.4-inch display Microsoft feature phone costs just $37 (a little under Kshs 4,000) or in other words, it is in the price territory of a fantastic entry-level smartphone already in the market, the Orange Kaduda Smart.<br />
<br />
It is hard to make the case for feature phones like the Nokia 216 when they are priced like some entry-level smartphones from local carriers Telkom Kenya and Safaricom (the old Neons) but Microsoft’s insistence means that there’s still a huge market for these devices (they sell millions of such every year) and who doesn’t like choice anyway? Plus, the kind of reliability one gets from Nokia 216-esque devices is much better than from similarly-priced smartphones which mostly struggle to deliver desirable mobile experiences.<br />
<br />
The Nokia 216 may be the last of Nokia-branded devices from Microsoft. HMD Global, a Finland-based company that entered into a 10-year agreement with Nokia to exclusively make and distribute Nokia-branded mobile devices, recently agreed to buy the feature phone business from Microsoft in a deal worth $350 million that is expected to close before the year ends.

Instagram Has Set To Give Us Drafts On Any Account

Sometimes you are usually in a hurry and may not have the time to publish your post. That is why drafts are handy and we have seen them being integrated as features in email services and on the mobile Twitter and Facebook apps.<br />

Now Instagram is being reported to join this club (although rather late) where they will finally allow all of its 500 million active users to make and access their drafts. This feature was apparently tested over a month ago and it seems they have seen it fit to roll it out to everybody.<br />

Drafts are incredibly useful in several ways where they can save your content for later publishing if you are not in the position to or if you want to publish the post at a specific time. This is also the latest feature added by the company after they decided to remove a feature that we didn’t use that much and we can sure trade drafts for that.

There’s Yet Another Android Smartphone From BlackBerry in the Works

<p>In the run-up to the release of the so-called “safest Android smartphone in the world”, the BlackBerry DTEK50, BlackBerry was said to be having two other smartphones in its fold that would be launched soon after the DTEK50 (then codenamed Neon).</p><br />
<p>Just like the DTEK50, the two devices, codenamed Argon and Mercury, were said to be midrangers. Samsung Confirms it is Spinning Off its Printer Business

After reports surfaced in the news media late last week that the company was mulling selling off its printer business, Samsung has confirmed that it is in the course of doing just that.<br />

It is the oldest device on this list. Back when it arrived, in March 2014, HTC was keen on bringing to the market something to take the place of highly-rated HTC One (M7). Back then, HTC claimed that the One M8’s Duo Camera lacked optical image stabilization (OIS) because “the technology was not possible on dual-camera systems”. Fast forward two years later and Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus not only has dual cameras but also OIS. How times change!<br />

Actually, it’s made them the centre of the device’s marketing campaigns. It is not hard to see why since the P9’s dual cameras are excellent as I’ve found out when using the device over the last 3 months. The P9, just like the iPhone 7 Plus, has two 12-megapixel sensors at the back. However, one takes black and white images while the other shoots in colour. Under normal circumstances, they come together to produce a single image with more depth, focus and clarity as I noted in my exhaustive review of the P9.<br />

WhatsApp for Android Now Has a Snapchat-ish Camera Interface, Big Emojis And More

WhatsApp developers keep adding new features on the app in iterative updates and although most of them are bug fixes, some usually come with interesting new features. This time round they have copied Snapchat’s Snap UI and it is not surprising at all.<br />

The first change is with the WhatsApp camera interface and it starkly reminds you of Snapchat.<br />

The new buttons are the sticker button, add text button and draw button. Just as the name says, when you tap the sticker button, a list of emoji stickers will appear for you to choose; the text button allows you to add a text and the draw button enables you to draw doodles with the colour(s) of your choice. You will be able to see this changes in version 2.16.262 and also 2.16.263 if you are a beta user.<br />

The second major feature is the Big emojis which are just inflated versions of the standard emojis, presumably to have a bigger ‘effect’ on the recipient. I was not able to see this on my ver. 2.16.263 but Android Police were able to spot them on an earlier version (v. 2.16.256)<br />

The last new change is a surprising one and it is the return of hyperlinks that originate from Telegram Messenger.  If you can remember, WhatsApp had intentionally made links that originate from Telegram appear as text rather than hyperlinks which was rather pointless to be honest. It seems they noticed that and it is now back!<br />

Samsung Mulls Selling its Printer Business to HP

Samsung is considering selling its printer business to HP according to reports appearing in sections of Korean media which the company has not responded to, yet.<br />

Samsung’s printer business is valued at $1.8 billion and selling it off will see the company finally concede to rivals such as HP, Epson and others whom it has trailed in the printer market for years, a stark contrast to the smartphones and televisions business segments where it leads the pack.<br />

It is the former that Samsung is likely in talks with if at all it wants to offload its printer business.

Facebook Terms Rumours of Mpesa Acquisition as Fabricated Nonsense

Last week, two Nigerian Bloggers had the opportunity of interviewing Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. In the interview, the CEO said he saw the visit to Lagos as an opportunity to learn from the local entrepreneur and developer ecosystem. He spoke highly of Nigeria's mobile money ecosystem calling it the most advanced in the world. “I think what you have here with mobile money is something interesting and unique”, he said.<br />

To our surprise we saw a few publications stating that the CEO announced plans for the social network to purchase mobile money transfer solution M-Pesa. Whats interesting was that those reports were construed as true despite being fallacious. We in fact received tonnes of inquiries on our various channels and even in personal capacities with many curious on their authenticity.  They are not. The reports originated from a respected local paper whose journalist was not part of the team that met the Facebook CEO.<br />

We would be keen to provide parts of the technology as we have done with connectivity”, he said.<br />

What does this mean?<br />

Facebook’s Messenger and WhatsApp are evolving into critical tools for small businesses across the world. They are increasingly using them for customer management and in some instances order fulfillment. The addition of a transaction end to this would make these services a complete suite for a small business. That is where M-Pesa comes  in owing to its transaction capabilities, making it possible to make payments. In addition, Messenger and WhatsApp both have a billion users and the ability to make peer-to-peer money transfer would be an interesting addition for Facebook. M-Pesa has allowed for the completion of billions of transactions for users in Kenya, which is something the CEO wanted to see first hand.  That is why Facebook CEO came to Kenya to see how M-Pesa has been able to achieve these two fetes.<br />
<br />
On M-Pesa, Vodafone through Vodafone Sales and Services Ltd (VSSL) owns proprietary rights to the M-Pesa platform and earns service fees accrued from the use of the mobile money transfer solution. If indeed Facebook was interested in an acquisition as reported, Vodafone would be the party to approach. Even so, Safaricom has clarified its position on the matter stating that these reports are untrue.

If you check the code, you can clearly see the “FUCK APPLE” within the code which is rather interesting as to why the coders decided to add this. It was not in one instance as it was repeated multiple times within the code which is some sort of record in terms of being passive aggressive.<br />
<br />
You may wonder why the WhatsApp engineer(s) decided to do this and a certain Redditor posted a probable answer. Apparently, Apple has strict regulations when it comes to reviewing apps.<br />
<br />
This sort of information can make people come up with reasons bordering on conspiracy level as to why specifically WhatsApp engineers decided to do such a thing. It is also interesting that WhatsApp let this be published knowing that someone out there will find out when they decide to decompile their apps.<br />
<br />
Since these apps usually have similar codes across platforms, it could be possible that the passive aggressive statement could have been added to a release in the iOS variant. A strained relationship between WhatsApp and Apple can be a bad thing for their iOS users and neither won’t want a situation where they will pull it from the App Store.

BlackBerry Expands Access to its Hub+ App to Android Lollipop Devices

Early last month, BlackBerry brought its Hub+ services app to the Google Play Store. However, the app (and as such its accompanying apps) could only work on devices running the (then) latest version of Android, 6.0 Marshmallow. BlackBerry promised to expand access to users with devices running older versions of Android later.<br />

A month later, the Canadian company has made good its promise. The BlackBerry Hub+, which is necessary for BlackBerry apps like BlackBerry Hub to work as it is the foundation upon which most BlackBerry apps and services are based, has been updated on the Play Store to support Android 5.0 devices.<br />
