The device that forever changed the world, Apple’s iPhone, has now hit a major milestone with Apple CEO Tim Cook announcing that the company recently sold its one billionth iPhone.

That’s right. iPhone number 1,000,000,000.

Today, when the company is selling tens of millions of iPhones every year, that may not be much of a surprise but one only needs to take a look back at the year 2007, 9 years ago, when then Apple CEO Steve Jobs took the stage to introduce the “iPod that could make phone calls as well”. When apps on mobile phones were distant rumours and a stylus on a resistive, not a finger on a capacitive touchscreen, was the most popular means of interacting with content on-screen.

Even though the iPhone has played a significant role in the industry, its sales have been falling in the last one year. The latest quarterly numbers from Apple indicate a sales decline of nearly 15% year over year with the company only selling 47.5 million iPhones in the 3 months leading to June 25th.

The company’s fortunes may change in the coming quarter as it gears to release a new iPhone model which is expected to get more customers through the doors of its iconic stores around the world.
